Some RUMI-nations!!!
Rumi, a sufi poet - (12th century) is a must-read for connaiseurs of poetry, students of philosophy, actually one and all.......an honest confession: i dont always understand the meaning of many of his poems...but down here are a few of his quotes n poems which are my favs:
Poetry
1. We are as the Flute
We are as the flute, and the music in us is from thee;we are as the mountain and the echo in us is from thee.
We are as pieces of chess engaged in victory and defeat:our victory and defeat is from thee, O thou whose qualities are comely!
Who are we, O Thou soul of our souls, that we should remain in being beside thee?
We and our existences are really non-existence;thou art the absolute Being which manifests the perishable.
We all are lions, but lions on a banner:because of the wind they are rushing onward from moment to moment.
Their onward rush is visible, and the wind is unseen:may that which is unseen not fail from us!
Our wind whereby we are moved and our being are of thy gift;our whole existence is from thy bringing into being.
2. If
If you can disentangle yourself from your selfish self all heavenly spirits will stand ready to serve you
if you can finally hunt down your own beastly self you have the right to claim Solomon's kingdom
you are that blessed soul who belongs to the garden of paradise is it fair to let yourselffall apart in a shattered house
you are the bird of happiness in the magic of existence what a pity when you let yourself be chained and caged
but if you can break free from this dark prison named body soon you will see you are the sage and the fountain of life.
3. The Way Things Should
What will our children do in the morning?
Will they wake with their hearts wanting to play, the way wings should?
Will they have dreamed the needed flights and gathered the strength from the planets that all men and women need to balance the wonderful charms of the earth
so that her power and beauty does not make us forget our own?
I know all about the ways of the heart – how it wants to be alive.
Love so needs to love that it will endure almost anything, even abuse, just to flicker for a moment. But the sky’s mouth is kind, its song will never hurt you, for I sing those words.
What will our children do in the morning if they do not see us fly?
4. Be With Those Who Help Your Being
Be with those who help your being.
Don't sit with indifferent people, whose breathcomes cold out of their mouths.
Not these visible forms, your work is deeper.
A chunk of dirt thrown in the air breaks to pieces.
If you don't try to fly,and so break yourself apart, you will be broken open by death, when it's too late for all you could become.
Leaves get yellow. The tree puts out fresh roots and makes them green.
Why are you so content with a love that turns you yellow?
5. THAT LIVES IN US
If you put your hands on this oar with me,they will never harm another, and they will come to find they hold everything you want.
If you put your hands on this oar with me, they would no longer lift anything to your mouth that might wound your precious land-that sacred earth that is your body.
If you put your soul against this oar with me,the power that made the universe will enter your sinewfrom a source not outside your limbs, but from a holy realm that lives in us.
Exuberant is existence, time a husk.
When the moment cracks open, ecstasy leaps out and devours space; love goes mad with the blessings, like my words give.
Why lay yourself on the torturer’s rack of the past and future?
The mind that tries to shape tomorrow beyond its capacities will find no rest.
Be kind to yourself, dear- to our innocent follies.
Forget any sounds or touch you knew that did not help you dance.
You will come to see that all evolves us.
If you put your heart against the earth with me, in serving every creature, our Beloved will enter you from our sacred realmand we will be, we will be so happy.
A few 'Rumi-isms':
1. "Let the beauty you love be what you do. There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth."
2. "When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy."
3. "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it."
4. "The universe and the light of the stars come through me."
5. "Burdens are the foundations of ease and bitter things the forerunners of pleasure."
6. “The art of knowing is knowing what to ignore.”
7. “Look for the answer inside your question.”
8. "Do you want to enter paradise?
To walk the path of Truth You need the grace of God.
We all face death in the end. But on the way, be careful Never to hurt a human heart!"
9. "It may be that the satisfaction I need depends on my going away, so that when I've gone and come back, I'll find it at home."
10. "Don't grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form."
