Some RUMI-nations!!!

Rumi, a sufi poet - (12th century) is a must-read for connaiseurs of poetry, students of philosophy, actually one and all.......an honest confession: i dont always understand the meaning of many of his poems...but down here are a few of his quotes n poems which are my favs:

Poetry
1. We are as the Flute
We are as the flute, and the music in us is from thee;we are as the mountain and the echo in us is from thee.
We are as pieces of chess engaged in victory and defeat:our victory and defeat is from thee, O thou whose qualities are comely!
Who are we, O Thou soul of our souls, that we should remain in being beside thee?
We and our existences are really non-existence;thou art the absolute Being which manifests the perishable.
We all are lions, but lions on a banner:because of the wind they are rushing onward from moment to moment.
Their onward rush is visible, and the wind is unseen:may that which is unseen not fail from us!
Our wind whereby we are moved and our being are of thy gift;our whole existence is from thy bringing into being.

2. If

If you can disentangle yourself from your selfish self all heavenly spirits will stand ready to serve you
if you can finally hunt down your own beastly self you have the right to claim Solomon's kingdom
you are that blessed soul who belongs to the garden of paradise is it fair to let yourselffall apart in a shattered house
you are the bird of happiness in the magic of existence what a pity when you let yourself be chained and caged
but if you can break free from this dark prison named body soon you will see you are the sage and the fountain of life.

3. The Way Things Should
What will our children do in the morning?
Will they wake with their hearts wanting to play, the way wings should?

Will they have dreamed the needed flights and gathered the strength from the planets that all men and women need to balance the wonderful charms of the earth

so that her power and beauty does not make us forget our own?

I know all about the ways of the heart – how it wants to be alive.

Love so needs to love that it will endure almost anything, even abuse, just to flicker for a moment. But the sky’s mouth is kind, its song will never hurt you, for I sing those words.

What will our children do in the morning if they do not see us fly?

4. Be With Those Who Help Your Being
Be with those who help your being.
Don't sit with indifferent people, whose breathcomes cold out of their mouths.
Not these visible forms, your work is deeper.
A chunk of dirt thrown in the air breaks to pieces.
If you don't try to fly,and so break yourself apart, you will be broken open by death, when it's too late for all you could become.
Leaves get yellow. The tree puts out fresh roots and makes them green.
Why are you so content with a love that turns you yellow?

5. THAT LIVES IN US

If you put your hands on this oar with me,they will never harm another, and they will come to find they hold everything you want.

If you put your hands on this oar with me, they would no longer lift anything to your mouth that might wound your precious land-that sacred earth that is your body.

If you put your soul against this oar with me,the power that made the universe will enter your sinewfrom a source not outside your limbs, but from a holy realm that lives in us.

Exuberant is existence, time a husk.
When the moment cracks open, ecstasy leaps out and devours space; love goes mad with the blessings, like my words give.

Why lay yourself on the torturer’s rack of the past and future?
The mind that tries to shape tomorrow beyond its capacities will find no rest.

Be kind to yourself, dear- to our innocent follies.
Forget any sounds or touch you knew that did not help you dance.
You will come to see that all evolves us.

If you put your heart against the earth with me, in serving every creature, our Beloved will enter you from our sacred realmand we will be, we will be so happy.

A few 'Rumi-isms':
1. "Let the beauty you love be what you do. There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth."
2. "When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy."
3. "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it."
4. "The universe and the light of the stars come through me."
5. "Burdens are the foundations of ease and bitter things the forerunners of pleasure."
6. “The art of knowing is knowing what to ignore.”
7. “Look for the answer inside your question.”
8. "Do you want to enter paradise?
To walk the path of Truth You need the grace of God.
We all face death in the end. But on the way, be careful Never to hurt a human heart!"
9. "It may be that the satisfaction I need depends on my going away, so that when I've gone and come back, I'll find it at home."
10. "Don't grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form."

A life extraordinaire or ordinary - its our own choice!!

This post is not to underplay the existence of an ordinary/"NORMAL" life/way of living...Its just that ....an ordinarily normal life is ....just wat its name says..."Ordinary"!!! A lot of ppl live their lives well....but not well enough...wats missing is that leap (sometines one giant one, sumtyms a series of small ones) from ordinary to Extraordinary (EO...from nw on...)

A lot of us miss chances/opportunities to lead EO lives just becoz they seemed so 'uncommon', or we rationalize dat 'nobody i know has dun this before /will do this' or 'it doesnt seem logical' or 'it appears risky...wat if i go wrong??' or simply, 'y be in a thin stream of minority, when i can be safe in the vast n accomodating ocean of majority'.....n so on...

Result: We tend to stick to d protective folds of the ordinary life, content with d way ur life is goin....n "thats d way it is" ---(lovely song by celine dion, btw!) n dats d way it continues to be...

How do we break dis old mould n come out brand n sparkling new??? List out things (career, habits, ways of thinking/ beliefs etc...) dat u've been doing the same way for ages now....ask yrself y r u doin them...if given a choice to change these, would u be happier or sadder; if d former, u kno wat u hv to do ...go ahead n get rid of them/change them...Merely Knowing, however, is not enuf....u'll hv to tak sum Action...ah...now dats where we develop cold feet...due to many reasons....fear of 'wat-will-happen-if-i-dont-stick-to-wat-i've-been-doin', sheer laziness, 'wat will others/society say', lack of willingness/inability to introspect n then to deal with wat dat introspection throws out..(some introspections are so scary dat we avoid introspecting ever again!!)...

We all should go thru this process of trying to re-invent ourselves once in a while....it helps us understand ourselves better...I think understanding ourselves fully is no mean task...n sumtyms much more difficult dan understanding others...(this is definitely true for me, i am sure it'll hold true for many more around the world...)

I now list down 10 things/activities/normally accepted 'norms'/ ways of living dat i consider downright banal....here it goes (in no particular order):

1. Mindless Craze to slim down n to continue to remain slim ...Remember: You are not as Fat as you imagine!!! - i'm gonna pamper myself as much as i can (as long as i remain healthy)..if ur healthy even 74 kgs at d age of 27 is not overweight! (oops, did i reveal my weight as on May 27, 2008?;)))

2. Getting into engineering/medicine/management/family business/ny field fr dat matter--- just becoz yr parents want u to or because everyone is doin it ...n not because U r interested in doin it...

3. Horribly mindless craze of 'settling' abroad .... a common 'escapist' n cowardly thot which emanates from every 4th person we meet..starts with 'goin abroad fr higher education' n then graduates to 'settling down there fr generations!!' - this line of thought kills me...n an entire separate post will be reserved for this topic!

4. Getting married in order to "settle" in life......Aaaaaaaargh! wat an 'unsettling' thought...

5. Preference for "own children" rather than going in for adoption.....If only most ppl think about this seriously, a lot of family-less kids will get a home n population pressures on our planet will get sum repreive!!!

6. Being in a job that makes u count days left till d weeknend or hours left before u leave for d day! now getting out of such a job this aint easy...esp. if u hv a family to support....but is merely "working to earn" enuf?

7. Lack of 'professional pride' in ny work dat u do...alternatively d "chalta-hai" attitude...

8. Getting 'into' frendships to get something 'out' of them...

9. Not having a 'BIG' reason/purpose to live for...

10. Letting petty things like greed, jealousy, hatred, ego shrink yr life...

Here's wishing an EO living to all!!

Horton hears a 'Who'..........................

One of the bestest-est-est-est-est-estest & sweeeeeetest movies i've seen in a long tym....This animation movie features 'Horton' - the cutest elephant ever on screen...:) now, one day Horton hears a 'Who' - a 'who' is a resident of 'whoville', which is an entire township which resides in a speck.....a speck of dust!! When he realises that the inhabitants of that nano-tiny world will be in trouble if not placed at a safe place, he takes upon himself the responsibility of taking the whos to safety. While ding this, he faces and overcomes loads of difficulties....but his determination, courage and sense of humor never wavers ....and he achieves his task finally:)
Brilliant voice-over by Jim Carrey...!!!

The best line in the movie -----Horton says: 'I said wat i meant and i meant wat i said..'
Real deep words those........!!!

A beautiful n touchin movie which engulfs u in a variety of emotions...with lessons which get etched in yr heart forever - Love, Respect (for all creatures, no matter how small), Trust (which the whos had in Horton), Sincerity, Determination, Courage (even wen he knows he's almost down and out), Hope, and the Vindication of the sometimes-lost-truth that 'Goodness always wins in the end'........:)

I hereby proclaim......I am Horton's beeeeeeegest Fan!!!! :)))

A 'Love'ly thing...called.....Love

Getting the following fwd from a fren triggered the idea of writing this post….
1st the fwd – here it goes:

A group of 4 to 8 year-old Children were asked, "What does love mean?"
The answers they gave were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined.
--"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday" (Tina - age 7)
--"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth." (Billy - age 4)
--"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." (Rebecca - age 8 )
--"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.." ( Chris sy - age 6 )
--"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." (Terri - age 4 )
--"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." (Danny - age 7)
--"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." (Tommy - age 6 )
--"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore. That's love" (Cindy -age 8)
--"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." (Mary Ann - age 4 )

Fwd ends here…it set me googling for some other quotes on love..here are a few of wat I found..

The greatest happiness of life it the conviction that we are loved -- loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves." By: Victor Hugo

"We can do not great things - only small things with great love." By: Paul Tillich

Love is not blind - It sees more and not less, but because it sees more it is willing to see less – Will Moss

My understanding/opinions/take on ‘Love’:
1. First and foremost, there is only one truth i.e. there exists one and only one type of ‘love’ in the world – Pure, Selfless and Unconditional. Any dilution in any of these 3 criteria means that the love is not true…
2. Love is Spiritual.
3. Love stems for innate respect for the other person. You cant love someone you don’t/cant respect..
4. We DON’T ‘Fall in Love’ ……..we actually RISE in it..because of its purity and innocence. Hence, wat we have to ‘fall’ for is not ‘Love’!!!
5. There can be no Pain in ‘Love’ – Pain comes only wen u love with expectations of reciprocity, expectation of being loved in return, wen u place demands/restrictions….
6. Love never goes waste….even if the ppl you love don’t love you back….Loving truly helps u become a better person, helps u grow.

Finally…..
I just finished reading this beautiful book – ‘Astrid and Veronika’ (will devote an entire post to it, sometime soon!!!). Am putting forth an extract from this book - Astrid talking to Veronika on Love:
“Love comes to us with no forewarning, and once given to us, it can never be taken away. We must remember that. It can never be lost. Love is not measurable. It cannot be counted in years, minutes or seconds, kilos or grams. It cant be quantified in any way. Nor can it be compared, one with the other. It simply Is. The briefest brush with Love can sustain you for a lifetime…..Never forget that all the love in your life is there inside you, always.”

Joey Mcintyre - Stay The Same

Title :Joey Mcintyre - Stay The Same
"Don't you ever wish you were someone else,
You were meant to be the way you are exactly.
Don't you ever say you don't like the way you are,
When you learn to love yourself, you're better off by far.
And I hope you always stay the same, cuz there's nothin' 'bout you I would change.

I think that you could be whatever you wanted to be..
If you could realize, all the dreams you have inside.
Don't be afraid if you've got something to say,
Just open up your heart and let it show you the way.

Believe in yourself, Reach down inside.
The love you find will set you free.........
Believe in yourself, you will come alive.
Have faith in what you do.You'll make it through...."

He's sung it so beautifully....its my fav song !!!

time to...

In the seventeenth century, the philosopher René Descartes spent a lot of time mulling over the problem of whether he existed or not. He famously said, “I think therefore I am.” in short, He thought he did exist.
a qn wich has always puzzled me: do v exist? guess we do... coz we breathe, eat, sleep, walk, talk... but do v 'live'? wat do v exist for? any specific purpose? god! am already quarter of a century ol' n stil do not know this specific purpose? am lost, actually.. guess will hv to find it really quick! wen will i start wrking on it? guess i've been lookin at things n ppl the same way for long now... time to contemplate..time to change... time to find newer things out there.. time to wake up to reality.. good morning to ME!!!

i luv my INDIA...

i luv my country............................but wanna do sumthin to BETTER it....i need sum ideas here, guys n gals!! send in as many thots on this as u can! JAI HIND!
